Recycling Holiday Lights

I took the day off to get my holiday decorating started.  First task was to put up the outside lights.  I’ve learned over the years to test all the strands of lights inside before I venture into the cold.  I’m so glad that I took the time to do this because apparently half of my lights “expired” this year.  I didn’t realize there was an expiration date on lights, but I don’t know how else to explain that 100% of the lights that I bought about 7 years ago worked last year, but gave up the ghost this holiday season.

It seems such a waste to throw away this sizable pile of lights (I posed my terrier beside the pile to give you an idea of how large it is) so I got on the internet to figure out if they could be recycled.  After some hunting, I found that Christmas lights are recyclable.  In fact, there are a number of recycling options listed in this article at BrightHub.com.

I’ll be recycling my lights with the Christmas Light Source Recycling Program who collects the lights, has the copper, plastic and glass recycled, and with the proceeds buys books for the DFW Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

Got any old lights you might want to use to brighten the lives of some tots this year?
